I love it when an apprentice acquires within touching distance of being accepted into the order. His training is essentially complete. He’s learned the rules. He knows who this guy is. He knows why he’s here and this guy knows where he’s going. And as masters, we’re truly just fine-tuning him and double-checking that he’s actually willing for his graduation. I was coupled up with Master Stone to oversee Apprentice Devall’s Personal Priesthood Interview and was hugely happy on the one and the other counts. I’ve seen youthful Devall throughout many of his naive seasons; the times when this chab was a rookie recruit with such an intensely wayward streak that we needed to pull out all the stops simply to steer him back on track. These troublesome guys in my experience go in one of 2 ways; they either shove it so far they acquire themselves thrown out of the order, or they pull things jointly and become remarkable apprentices. Devall, fortunately, fell into the latter camp. In fact, in the relatively short period of time I’ve been in the order, I’ve not known a youthful fellow who’s generated such passion within the masters. It has been a great privilege to play such a key role in his training.
